In what was a highly constructive and successful meeting, Tottenham Hotspur made a commitment to remain at the present White Hart Lane site, subject to detailed plans for the regeneration of the area.
David Lammy said: "We are all acutely aware of the need to address the issue of regeneration of the High Road. Tottenham Hotspur are key to this and have shown today that they intend to play an integral part in this process"
"It is necessary to change peoples' perceptions of Tottenham. The High Road is for many people their only glimpse of the area."
Further investment in the area will act as a magnet to future enterprise.
Transportation and infrastructure in this part of Tottenham have always been a cause for concern for both residents and travelling football supporters."
George Meehan, Leader of Haringey Council said: "We welcome Tottenham Hotspur's commitment to stay at WHL. This will be a major boost to the regeneration of the east of the Borough. With links to both Stansted airport to the North and the City in the South there is no reason why Tottenham High Road should not be viewed as an ideal area for investment. We will work with the local people and Spurs to make sure everyone benefits from this opportunity."
Daniel Levy, Executive Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur said: "We are delighted with the approach that the local Borough Council and the Mayor's office have chosen to adopt. It has always been our hope to stay in Tottenham if at all possible and to make our Stadium one of the finest in Europe".
"We already enjoy a fine working relationship with David Lammy, and are sure he and all concerned will help us to tackle the issues that we will face in order to substantially regenerate Tottenham High Road. We have previously expressed certain reservations about committing substantial funds to the redevelopment of the stadium, however, we are now convinced that there is genuine commitment to the regeneration of the area to the benefit of the wider community"
Nicky Gavron, Deputy Mayor and Assembly Member for Haringey and Enfield said: "Spurs' ambitious plans are just the confidence boost Tottenham needs. Long term, the future is looking good. Middlesex University is building a major new campus at the Hale. Planned rail improvements will enhance links to Stansted - the country's fastest growing airport - and to the Stratford Channel Tunnel interchange. Extending the Victoria Line to Northumberland Park is being given serious consideration. Better transport should bring new jobs and opportunities to Tottenham. Spurs' commitment to the High Road is just the high profile initiative needed now to change perceptions of the area and kick start regeneration".
