The Players Tottenham Should Look to Sell This Summer

It's been a busy summer already in N17.

With Jose Mourinho keen to shape his 2020/21 Tottenham squad as efficiently as possible ahead of a demanding - and outright ridiculous - start to the new season, moves have been aplenty already in north London.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg fills a gaping profile void in midfield, while forgotten man and free agent Joe Hart is set to challenge Paulo Gazzaniga as Hugo Lloris' number two, all while adding a wee bit of experience and leadership to a squad Mourinho desires to evolve into "intelligent.." you know what's.

So, with a fresh defensive midfielder off the transfer checklist, 'only' a pair of right-backs, centre-half and back-up striker remain. Maybe another creative option wouldn't go amiss as well.

Nevertheless, the financial strains brought about by COVID-19 combined with Daniel Levy's savvy but stingy business ideals mean the 'Special One's' set to have limited funds at his disposal this summer as he attempts to ensure his spell at the Lilywhites is a trophy-laden one.

Wonga will have to be raised through player sales if Spurs are to secure their desired targets in positions of need, and here's a list of who should join Kyle Walker-Peters and Oliver Skipp (loaned to Norwich) in exiting the club.

1. Serge Aurier

Mourinho tried his best to help Aurier reach 2009/10 Maicon levels of full-back play, but it shouldn't be enough for Spurs to keep the Ivorian on their books past this summer.

Aurier's advanced role as part of the Portuguese string-puller's asymmetric 4-2-3-1 - which he drifted away from after the restart - saw him return a career-high eight assists in all competitions, and there's no doubting an improvement in the 27-year-old's overall play.

However, those moments of utter madness refused to depart the right-back's game - as shown in simply unexplainable penalty giveaways against Manchester City and Liverpool - while his ability from crossing situations proved frustratingly inefficient.

It appears Spurs are attempting to get Aurier off their wage bill as soon as possible, and they'd be absolutely right to do so - provided they can draft in one or two talents at the position.

Potential Price: £18m

2. Danny Rose

“I am very happy to stay at Tottenham and see my last 10 or 11 months out, I would love to. There is nothing I want more than to play one more time in front of the fans."

Yeah, about that, Danny...

While it'd would be great to see the once superb left-back maraud - or attempt to - down the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium turf one more time, we're past the point of entertaining nostalgia. Spurs and Mourinho have got to be ruthless regarding Rose.

His time is up in north London, provided they can sniff out a potential buyer.

Potential Destinations: Newcastle, Leeds, West Ham
Potential Price: £10m

3. Moussa Sissoko

Perhaps the most controversial on this list, Moussa Sissoko's errant form after the restart highlighted why Spurs should move on from their cult hero.

It wouldn't be by any means a disaster if he was to remain at the club this summer - he provides versatility, a transitional threat and is a popular figure in the dressing room - but if Mourinho's men are to progress, Sissoko's a squad player at best, not a regular starter alongside Harry Winks in the middle of the park.

Instead of trying to negotiate a swap deal with Inter for maverick talent Tanguy Ndombele, Levy should explore any potential avenues regarding Sissoko; he's more of an Antonio Conte midfielder despite Ndombele's overwhelming technical superiority.

This might be Spurs' last chance to earn a pretty penny from Sissoko - and that penny may come in the form of a brutish Slovakian centre-back.

Potential Price: Swap Deal/£18m

4. Erik Lamela

A divisive figure in N17, it might finally be time for Spurs to walk away from once-record signing Erik Lamela.

With his typical Argentine tenacity and knack of picking up dangerous positions between opposition lines, Lamela certainly offers this Tottenham squad plenty, but his decision-making and overall execution in the final third has refused to develop since his 2013 move.

The 28-year-old still appears as raw as he did when he arrived from Roma as crafty right-winger, and although he's a useful option off the bench for Mourinho, Lamela's a player who offers a healthy financial return.

This is a move Spurs may have to make if they are to fix gaping holes this summer.

Potential Destinations: Inter, Roma, Fiorentina, Valencia
Potential Price: £15m

5. Juan Foyth

Juan Foyth's situation is a simple one for Mourinho: if he's not in your plans, allow him to depart on loan this summer - preferably to Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds.

The Argentine's blessed with bags of talent which has often gone unnoticed and Spurs would be making an error if they were to sanction a permanent sale of the centre-half.

Foyth deserves minutes next season, wherever that may be. Heard he's half-decent at right-back, though?

Potential Destinations: Leeds, Norwich
Potential Price: Loan/£15m
