The Tottenham Lineup That Should Start Against Manchester United

Everything's coming up Milhouse on the Lilywhite side of north London!

Things could've easily unravelled for Jose Mourinho following his side's pitiful opening weekend defeat to Everton, but they have instead enjoyed a six-game unbeaten run across three competitions, progressing into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and Europa League group stages in the process.

Sunday's encounter, though, may be their toughest test yet despite United's unconvincing form to start the campaign. Spurs typically underwhelm at Old Trafford - best exemplified by their tepid 2-1 defeat in Manchester last December - but there's no doubting that Mourinho will be desperate to get one over his former club and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Super Sunday.

Here's the lineup the Portuguese boss should pick for the United clash.

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Hugo Lloris (GK) - The Frenchman is yet to keep a clean sheet this term but has nonetheless impressed. Joe Hart may have pulled off a sharp save or two in the week but Lloris is a shoo-in for Sunday.

Serge Aurier (RB) - Matt Doherty may well be first-choice but it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Ivorian make his first Premier League appearance of the season. Aurier starred in the Carabao Cup victory against Chelsea and Mourinho may favour him over Doherty - who played 90 minutes on Thursday - due to his superior athleticism against Marcus Rashford.

Davinson Sanchez (CB) - Toby Alderweireld is also in contention for Sunday's starting XI but Mourinho would be wise to pick the Colombian. Sanchez has started Spurs' last two Premier League outings and handled Callum Wilson with ease last weekend.

Eric Dier (CB) - The Englishman seems a personal favourite of Mourinho's and after being rested for the Maccabi Haifa rout, Dier's set to return to the starting XI on Sunday. He impressed against Chelsea in the week - toilet trips aside.

Sergio Reguilon (LB) - This guy's going to be a star, isn't he? So energetic and dynamic, the Spaniard's poised to bring a whole different dynamic to the Spurs attack. He should make his debut here despite Ben Davies' Europa League heroics.

2. Midfielders

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CM) - The Dane's starting to settle nicely in N17. Although he may not be the profile of midfielder the majority of Spurs fans thought he was, there's no denying that what he provides is something that's been absent from the Lilywhites midfield since Mousa Dembele left town.

Harry Winks (CM) - After a pretty poor start to the season, Winks enjoyed an efficient showing against Newcastle last weekend. The England international seems to have established a neat understanding with Hojbjerg in the middle of the park.

Tanguy Ndombele (CM) - With Giovani Lo Celso a doubt, Ndombele should get another chance to start. The Frenchman's been superb in the minutes he's been granted thus far in 2020/21; from crisp cameos against Newcastle to complete 90-minute (!) performances against European giants Shkendija. He's a freakish talent and has the potential to be the majestic x-factor in Mourinho's side.

3. Forwards

Lucas Moura (RW) - Another personal favourite of Mourinho's, Moura's started all three of Spurs' Premier League games thus far - netting from close range against the Magpies. The Brazilian should retain his place in the XI should his manager opt for a 4-3-3.

Harry Kane (ST) - The arrival of Carlos Vinicius from Benfica may have just made a certain Harry Kane's ankles a little sterner. The imperious striker netted a hat-trick in the week to celebrate the prestigious honour of being named 90min's Tottenham Player of the Month.

Steven Bergwijn (LW) - The Dutchman's had a heavy workload as of late but may be forced to start in place of the injured Son Heung-min to provide balance to Spurs' front line.
