Thug play needs stamping out

Amazingly, It’s understood derby day referee Steve Bennett will not review his decision that potentially stands as a benchmark for dirty players to elbow opponents in the face without it appearing to be intentional.

According to the Daily Mirror, after watching the incident that ended with Teemu Tainio requiring stitches to a wound above his eye, Bennett dismissed the clash as incidental. This is bound to lead to similar displays of thuggery on the pitch among some of the country’s top players, in scenes that were supposed to have been clamped down on.

Meanwhile, a fan who had a brief verbal altercation with Campbell as the defender made his way down the tunnel after the game was arrested, quizzed by police and could be banned from White Hart Lane if prosecuted and found guilty.

In The Sun, Tottenham Head Coach Martin Jol responded to that and another incident where Campbell deceived the laws of the game by committing a serious foul.

"He’s going up with his arm and then he comes with his head and nobody can say it’s intentional, so he’s doing a very good job."

"There was a second situation with Michael Dawson and it was exactly the same technique. Dawson was almost knocked out.

"When your body follows up as the second part of the tackle it’s a good technique. I think referees must make up their mind about protecting players — is it 100% OK or is it totally wrong?

"Dawson was almost knocked out and you couldn’t say if it was on purpose or not so it’s a very good habit."
