Tottenham 'confident' Son Heung-min will sign new long-term contract

Tottenham are 'confident' of tying Son Heung-min down to a new, long-term deal in the near future.

The South Korean international has been one of the standout performers in English football this season, chipping in with 16 goals and eight assists in 25 appearances and forging a remarkable strike partnership with Harry Kane.

Son netted his 16th of the season against Brentford on Tuesday evening as Spurs booked their place in the Carabao Cup final, and a lucrative new deal is on the table for the forward.

According to the Telegraph, contract negotiations are continuing between the club and player, but Spurs are 'confident' of him putting pen to paper on a new deal.

The feeling is mutual, with Son keen to extend his stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium past 2023 - when his current contract expires.

The 28-year-old has changed his representatives during the negotiation process and this, coupled with the new financial uncertainty triggered by the latest UK lockdown, means no immediate announcement on Son's Spurs future is expected.

The forward currently pockets £140,000 per week, but is in line for a bumper pay rise should he sign a new deal. Son's new contract could see him earn in the region of £200,000-a-week.

This wage would see him become one of the club's top four earners, with only Gareth Bale, Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele pocketing a salary equal to or more than that figure.

The substantial wage increase is a reflection of the huge status and importance Son holds in north London - and manager Jose Mourinho was quick to pay tribute to him following his side's recent win over Brentford.

"That's the humility of a player," Mourinho said (via Goal). "That's Sonny. That's the human nature. He's like that. Some other guys they are not like that. For him it's the team. So special player but also a special human being."
