Martin Jol: "It was a good first half performance, I thought we controlled it. We looked a good team again but we gave away one or two chances. On the other hand, we created a number of opportunities.

"It has not all been about gelling together as a team, away against Bolton, Manchester United and Liverpool we didn't put away our chances, but lately we have picked up and have been doing better, but have still not been 100 per cent. We should have scored, we didn't and that gave us an awkward feeling again.

"Ghaly and Dawson had great chances, Defoe and Berbatov half-chances. When we had everyone on the field we did well but the second half was totally different.

"We should have been ahead before being very unfortunate - injury-wise - in the second half along with the sending off of Calum. It didn't make it easy for us.

"We had Chimbonda who had never played in central defence before and Zokora - they were like lions while Paul Stalteri came in for the first time this season.

"Villa put us under pressure and we could have lost it in the end. Having said that, we could have nicked it as well and overall we deserved at least a point."

"Aaron came in for the first time since his knee injury. Without him we were playing with four central midfielders across the middle, but I think Danny has done well lately. He has got more influential with his free-kicks and has become an effective player for us.

"But at the same time we have lacked width and pace a bit in our last few games."

Chris Hughton: "One plus from the game was that Pascal Chimbonda played most of the second half at centre-half and did ever so well."

"And we felt Didier Zokora could do a job for us in there as well in that situation. Taking into account we had to play a right-back and midfielder as our central defensive pairing, it was a great result."

Jermain Defoe: "It was tough, but we played with a lot of energy even though we only had two days to prepare after the international break.

"But I thought we were going to win the game. Maybe we deserved to win. We had a slow start to the season, we didn't have much luck in our first few games but it has picked up.”

"Own goal? It was my goal! It was a great goal from Gareth Barry and we had to stay strong towards the end, so I thought we did well.

"I felt sharp and fresh, just disappointed we didn't get the win - especially with going through at the end when I was onside. That was another story though."
