Often Robbie Keane was the only player to challenge Birmingham's defence and in the circumstances it was hardly surprising that their only goal attempt of note in the first half came from Steve Carr following a strong run from defence.

It was not until the 55th minute that the Londoners finally produced a move of real quality that ended in Sheringham scoring the opening goal.

Darren Anderton opened up Birmingham's defence with a low pass out to Christian Ziege who saw his low shot parried by Nico Vaesen. The ball fell to the waiting Sheringham who pounced to glide his shot home for his fifth league goal of the season.

The goal opened up the match with Birmingham responding with two efforts from out of form John and a close-range shot by Robbie Savage.

But it was not until the 63rd minute that Birmingham grabbed the equaliser.

Stan Lazaridis made a run down the left opening up a gap for Kenna. The Republic of Ireland international defender broke clear before unleashing a right-footed 25-yard drive into the far corner of the net.
