Tottenham 3 Bolton 1

Spurs moved up to third in the table after overcoming battling Bolton in the second half at White Hart Lane.

The visitors had kept their hosts at bay for nearly an hour before Robbie Keane broke the deadlock and looked like they might earn a point when Youri Djorkaeff scored an equaliser five minutes later.

However, Keane put Spurs ahead again with 17 minutes to go and Simon Davies ensured there was no way back with a third just before the final whistle.

The home side had gone into the game in buoyant mood and it was not surprising considering Spurs had scored 13 goals past Bolton in three games at White Hart Lane last season.

However, straight from the kick-off the visitors made it clear Tottenham were not going to have it all their own way as they gave the home team no time to settle.

That meant that although Spurs were enjoying the majority of possession they struggled to break Bolton down and it was the visitors who had the first chance.

Ricardo Gardner lifted the ball over the Spurs defence to Michael Ricketts but the striker could only stab the ball wide from six yards.

That seemed to spark the home side into life and Teddy Sheringham had a good chance to give them the lead in the 18th minute only to miscontrol Keane's throughball and allow Jussi Jaaskelainen to block.

Just seven minutes later Keane should have done better when he found himself all alone on the penalty spot only to head Davies' cross well wide.

When Jamie Redknapp's cleaver free kick flew just wide and Sheringham had a goal disallowed for offside just before half time it began to appear that it would not be Tottenham's day.

The question was whether Bolton could maintain their extraordinary tempo in the second half and the way Spurs came at them after the break showed that they would have their work cut out.

Stephen Carr almost marked his return from injury with a 20-yard strike that Jaaskelainen did well to push onto the bar and then Sheringham wasted another great opportunity by taking too long to shoot, after being put clear by Keane.

With the game still goalless Spurs were in danger of being hit on the break and it almost happened in the 56th minute when Djorkaeff played Ricketts in only for the striker to drag his shot across goal and past the far post.

Bolton were made to pay two minutes later when Goran Bunjevcevic's deep cross was cut back by Davies giving Keane the easiest of goals from six yards out.

However, just five minutes later Bolton were level when Kevin Nolan chipped the ball over the Spurs defence and Djorkaeff blasted a shot past Kasey Keller from a tight angle.

Now Bolton really started to tire and Spurs took full advantage with Keane grabbing his second after being set up by substitute Gus Poyet.

Sheringham could have made the game safe but wasted two good opportunities and it was not until Davies fired home a third in the final minute that Tottenham sealed the victory
