It was a hard-fought but not particularly thrilling game to watch.

Moments of excitement in front of goal were few and far between. Only Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe's pace caused West Ham United any problems, but the home side lacked the instinct to supply the final ball.

Defoe and Javier Mascherano were both booked just before the break, to give the game a much needed impetus, as Mido secured the points in first half stoppage time, supplying the game's only goal.

Martin Jol: "West Ham had a lot of good intentions. They were motivated for this game. The good thing was that we didn't give them the chance to.

"We were up for it, concentrated, motivated and everyone knew it wouldn't be easy to play a third game in a week again but we showed great character. My only complaint was that we didn't score a second goal because that can make it difficult.

"We worked hard, the concentration was 100 per cent and they enjoyed it, so that was important. They showed great character, commitment and it was not just after European games, it was after internationals as well."

"The same players just about played against Aston Villa and Besiktas and on Friday I decided to play the same back four against West Ham, to make one change in midfield. Dimitar Berbatov had played four games in 10 days, so he needed a rest but it's still a little gamble because if Mido hadn't scored, it wouldn't have paid off.

"It was a great result but it was not easy because we came back from Turkey on Friday, had a day to recover, to prepare, to look at the videos and the analysis of individual players and then played again on Sunday. We've done it a couple of times now and we've won again, so that was very satisfying."

Ledley King: "After such a good performance in the UEFA Cup in Turkey there was always a possibility with all the travelling that we might be a little tired but West Ham at home was a massive game and we were looking forward to it.

"The tired legs soon went out of the window - we were up for the game and even though we might not have been at our best, the team spirit was great and with that, the determination to get the three points.

"If you look at the chances, they had one in the first half and not too much else. Although we didn't keep the ball as well as we can, in spells we put moves together, quick breaks and created the better chances.

"We could have won it two or three-nil but in the end we had to dig deep and see out a 1-0 victory."

Mido: "We got our chance and we grabbed it the best we could. I was injured and didn't travel to Turkey, which was a big disappointment for me, but I was involved this time and it was my chance to prove myself.

"I was delighted with the performance, the win and the goal. It was a tight angle for me, but I tried my luck. I took the first touch well, decided to have a go and thankfully it went in."

"Here there were some fresh players who came in and performed like the others who won at Besiktas."

Jermain Defoe: "When the West Ham player fouled me (Javier Mascherano) I reacted in a bit of a mischievous way. The incident doesn't look great on TV but the referee was standing right over me and if he felt I had done anything bad he would have sent me off. This has been blown out of all proportion."
