Martin Jol made one change from the starting XI at Newcastle on Saturday with Jermain Defoe returning after he missed the game at St James' Park with a knee injury.

Danny Murphy returned to the bench where Reto Ziegler also replaced Mido (slight groin).

Martin Jol: "Villa were organised and dangerous with two very quick players up front, that was a bit different because normally they have played with a target man.

"I felt we handled the pace of Baros and Agbonlahor and defensively we did well.

"In the first half we lacked a bit of support play but Steed Malbranque did that in the second half. The second half was a bit better.

"Having said that, we also had the initiative in the first half, so overall we deserved the points against a good Villa team who have done well away from home most of this season.

"At the end it was difficult, at 2-0 it looked perhaps easier than we thought, they then scored to make it 2-1 but luckily enough we held on to give everyone a Boxing Day present."

"Mido was going to be on the bench if anything went wrong with Jermain Defoe or Dimitar Berbatov but we had a finishing session for the players who weren't involved at Newcastle and he got injured (slight groin) then."

"Jermain was the difference, simple, although as a team I felt we deserved something out of this game because we created a bit more than them.

"We only had two attacking players against Villa and they knew they have to do it and there was responsibility on Jermain because normally if he wasn't scoring, I would have put Robbie Keane on. I couldn't do that against Villa, Jermain knew that and he responded with two quality goals."

Ledley King: "After losing up at Newcastle with a disappointing performance it was vitally important that we came home and got three points again.
