Teemu Tainio slotted into midfield in place of Wayne Routledge, with Robbie Keane and Mido reunited up top.

The game had a positive open feel to it as Newcastle could have opened the scoring in the first couple of minutes when Scott Parker broke into the penalty box but fired the ball past the post.

Then Lee Young-Pyo had the vision to slide Keane in on goal on eight minutes. The home supporters thought the deadlock had been broken as the striker proceeded to slot the ball past Shay Given and into the corner of the net, but it was adjudged to be offside by the assistant referee.

Tottenham went close again when Michael Carrick played a superb ball into the path of Tainio after the half-hour mark. The Finnish midfielder burst into the penalty box but struck a low, dipping left-foot effort across the area, which fell just too far in front of the on-rushing Keane.

Keane then saw his second effort of the game harshly adjudged offside on 39 minutes, before Tottenham finally did open the scoring. A long Robinson clearance was flicked on by Mido and landed into the path of Tainio to the left of the Newcastle penalty area. As Titus Bramble attempted to knock him off the ball Tainio struck a sweet left-foot shot past the stranded Given into the net for his first goal for the club.

Jermaine Jenas had a golden chance to increase Tottenham's lead on 50 minutes. Keane was able to squeeze Jenas through to the right of the penalty box but the midfielder could only drag his shot into the side-netting.

A Jenas interception then found Keane who picked out Mido’s flight path with a cross from the left on 65 minutes. The Egyptian hit his volley into the ground and it bounced over Given and into the corner of the net.

Almost straight after a tiring Tainio was replaced by Michael Brown and Jermain Defoe got the call to take over from Keane on 79 minutes.

Newcastle's misery was compounded on 84 minutes when sub Charles N'Zogbia thumped in a shot on goal that was only parried by Robinson into the path of Shola Ameobi. He somehow managed to fire the rebound over the bar from eight yards out.
