We didn't have it all our own way though - a Blackburn reply just before the break made the early period of the second half uncomfortable even more so when Craig Bellamy levelled.

But the game suddenly had it all - hand ball claims, crunching tackles and lightening quick counter attacks and a combination of substitute Aaron Lennon and Mido that won the day as the encounter turned into an end-to-end thriller.

Martin Jol said: "The first half was ideal with two goals. Robbie Keane made the difference because the first goal is exactly what you have in mind with him but you can only dream about that sort of goal. Mido was intelligent also with the quick throw-in. To concede and make it 2-1 just before half-time was unfortunate and then in the second half they took the game to us and I thought they were terrific. In the end it was an essential victory for us but I thought we were a bit fortunate."

"I am happy with the result - I think Robbie Keane made a difference for us as we made a great start with two goals in the first half but we missed team balance following a difficult week with a number of players away on international duty and no game. The lads showed great spirit to come back after they equalised, but once they scored (before half time) we were a bit insecure. There was a lot of tension because we were thinking do we go for 3-1 or protect the lead? When we had the chance to break and play on the counter attack we were sloppy so I wasn't particularly happy with how we played, especially in the second half, but we have sometimes had problems at home. We struggled because we couldn't get the initiative back and Blackburn were the better team. Aaron Lennon came on and gave us an outlet. We had played a bit narrow in midfield until then and he wanted to attack the (wide) spaces so I was pleased with him."

Spurs starting line-up: Robbie Keane started while Jermaine Jenas and Teemu Tainio also returned to the side. So Defoe, Lennon and Murphy all dropped to the bench. Calum Davenport replaced Gardner among the substitutes and there’s no space for Huddlestone or Kelly.

First half goal action: Two left footed strikes by Robbie Keane the second after Brad Friedel fumbled a Michael Carrick free-kick. Craig Bellamy crossed from the right for Florent Sinama Pongolle to head in a Blackburn lifeline.

Second half goal action: Roles were reversed as Pongolle provided Bellamy with a cross from the right and the striker levelled the score with his right foot from 12 yards out. But Mido replied to put Spurs back in front from a cross on the right by substitute Aaron Lennon.
