Steed Malbranque had a good debut as Spurs looked for an opening but the visitors held their own.

Martin Jol: "All the ingredients were there for an upset - they were organised with an outstanding goalkeeper, they gave us the initiative and that was not easy.

"We had five chances in the first half but it was one of those games where the ball wasn't going in the net.

"But I felt home advantage was there, we kept believing in the second half and we had some outstanding performances.

"I was concerned but luckily our quality probably gave us the edge, Dimitar Berbatov gave us that little extra and Aaron Lennon showed a good mentality when he came on.

"We had 34,000 fans in the stadium and the lads knew that, Edgar Davids was skipper and said before the game how important it was to go into the quarter-finals. We showed good character in the second half to grind out the result."

Andy Barcham: "It was the best feeling ever. I was so happy to get the call up, although I was a bit nervous at the beginning. But once I got used to the crowd it is like a normal game of football and I enjoyed myself.

"Port Vale did well and when I was on the pitch it was quite tight. I was just happy to have played though."

Dorian Dervite: "It was just my hair that touched the ball so maybe it was half a goal for me!"

"I didn't imagine playing so early for the first team, but it was a good game and I was very happy to have been involved.

"It was a very good atmosphere, which made it a very good night. It was a very good experience."
