The visitors showed their intentions in the early period of the game before a spell of dominance from the home side.

Martin Jol: "They were five matches unbeaten, should have beaten Villa last week. They put the ball in the mix and they had four or five players who were good in the air.

"We didn't play particularly well but I thought before if we could match their effort and determination - which they had a lot of - then we would have a great chance of winning the game with our quality up front.

"There were a few concerns in my mind when we went a goal down after such a busy spell. We needed two early goals to provide us with a cushion at home at the end of the week we'd had. We didn't get it, they scored first and it gave us a bit of a worry because we knew it would be difficult from then.

"We allowed them to cross the ball and we didn't pressurise them when they scored the first goal but it didn't take too long for us to get back but we had weapons of our own - Jermain Defoe scored out of nothing after a dull period of the game and then Dimitar Berbatov, another great goal that had nothing to do with team play as he did it out of nothing, that's the quality we had out there.

"We knew there was a bit of space down that flank which we tried to exploit with Steed Malbranque dropping off and putting the ball into that area. It came off and it was good. We knew after we got the second that we would be able to hit them on the break but we had to wait for too long to score the third one so it made for an exciting game again."

"Teemu Tainio played against Leverkusen but couldn't play again so soon after his operation. Tom Huddlestone and Didier Zokora did well. Our defence was the same and up front Robbie Keane played on the Thursday and because Jermain was sharp we played him and it came off because he scored.
Mido had a little tear in his groin and that's why he wasn't fit for selection."

Chris Hughton: "From both teams' perspective, everything changed in that couple of minutes before the break."

"Both were wonderful finishes, particularly Jermain's - not just the execution of the goal, but the way he turned the lad Boyce."

"That was the spark we needed and then Berba's goal followed soon after. We were always aware of the qualities of our strikers, that they're capable of producing goals out of nothing."

Michael Dawson: "It was quite early in the game when we went down, but Jermain's goal was a little bit of magic and I was glad he did that to someone in the Premiership because he seemed to do it to me in training quite often.

"Berbo's finish was fantastic and then young Lenny popped up. He's worked so hard in creating chances for others so it was nice for him to get one himself.

"It was tough, a big physical battle but we came out on top. We needed those three points."
