Sherwood learning on the Job

Last updated : 23 December 2013 By Hoggg

On Sunday I really did not want to be drawn into my opinion or thoughts before the match. Pre match I was getting the usual pile of emails and messages and questions from my friends. Essentially I was so disappointed with the early exit from the cup, but  I wanted to reserve my judgement until seeing what Sherwood would do against Southampton.

Pleasantly I was surprised by Sherwood, especially after seeing how AVB handled himself.

I am not anti AVB or glad that he was sacked, however I am glad to see that Sherwood took on board what he learnt and the comments from all after his huge mistake against West Ham (taking off a striker and going defensive). If Sherwood continues to learn this quickly he could become a great manager.

However we cannot get carried away. This is Sherwood’s first management job after moving up from working with the youngsters. He is not used to the level of plays he will have to deal with on a daily basis nor the amount of pressure from fans, to the media and right up to Levy. For me he can only take each day as it comes.

Sherwood may feel that he should not be given a short term deal, but with no previous experience he must be grateful for the opportunity he has been given. Does he deserve a long term contract, should he want a long term contract? For me the answer is no. If Sherwood is serious he should take the reigns until the end of the season (not saying that this is our best option, just his). If he achieved CL football than he is in a strong position to demand a large contract, if not he may still get something with the club, if he fails to impress Levy he would have the experience to then press onto another club. For Sherwood short term is a win win, except for his pocket (which I hope is one of the last things on his list).

If the team begins to react well to his new tactics and his vision then I can see a long term contract, but not without evidence.

We cannot make a knee jerk decision to the situation. Some of the best managers would be available come the summer in 2014 and if this is the case I would rather wait till then and not appoint someone else just as they are available now.
