Carrick intends to upstage his hero

Carrick's hometown club and goalscoring hero, no to mention the hostile reception he can expect to receieve now stand in the way of him clutching a trophy for the very first time.

As a Geordie, Carrick knows how much it would mean for Toon Army "legend" Shearer to win silverware in his last season as a player. But Carrick has gone so far as to warn the former England striker "you can win the UEFA Cup but we want the FA Cup." The Magpies travel to Olympiakos for a last 16 first leg tie on Thursday, just three days before hosting Spurs in the last eight of the FA Cup.

"I grew up worshipping Alan (Shearer) as a player because of what he means to Newcastle. He's the greatest scorer in the Premier League and I would love to see him win something this year."

Newcastle United are in a rich vein of form and have only lost once so far this year. They are likely to show the similar desperation to progress in the competition as Southampton showed.

‘We want the FA Cup’ Michael Carrick prepares to tarnish Alan Shearer’s swansong season.

While Spurs will be hoping to turnaround Saturday's disappointment and haven't yet given up on a top six finish. The blow of defeat at Southampton was softened by the fact only Bolton, out of the sides immediately above Spurs in the table, won their own games.

"We're not getting too down, we're disappointed about the result, but we are still in a decent position (in the table). It was a chance missed, but hopefully there will be a few more chances to push up before the end of the season," said Carrick.
