Club agree fee for Gomes the Octopus

The club's search for a new goalkeeper has seemingly come to an end with the announcement that a fee has been agreed with PSV Eindhoven for goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

Juande Ramos has scoured Europe for a suitable first choice stopper since losing faith in current incumbent Paul Robinson last season. The former England number one is now expected to move to Aston Villa.

A statement on the club's official website said: "We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with PSV Eindhoven for the transfer of Heurelho Gomes to the Club, subject to the player agreeing personal terms, passing a medical examination and obtaining his work permit."

The technicalities of the deal should not prove a formality for a goalkeeper of Gomes' pedigree. The Brazilian international has been capped 17 times for his country and has experienced years of success with PSV, conceding only 24 goals in 34 league games last season.

Known as the Octopus due to his seemingly unnaturally long arms, Gomes was superb when his new club and his former club met in the UEFA Cup last season, saving fantastically from a Steed Malbranque effort and later pushing out Jermaine Jenas' potentially decisive penalty.

The fee for Gomes is believed to be in the region of £8m but could be as much as £10m, which would represent a British record fee for a goalkeeper. The current record is the £9m Sunderland paid Hearts for Craig Gordon last summer.

The Mirror recently listed ten things you may or may not know about our new Brazilian shot stopper, including:

  • He started out as a centre forward, only changing to goalkeeping after playing the position in a sand football tournament so as not to get left out.

  • He had a poor childhood and after taking up football at 14, had to walk 6km to training every day.

  • He kept clean sheets in 60% of his appearances for PSV in the Eredivisie, a percentage that no other keeper has bettered in the league's history.

  • Since joining PSV he has helped the club to four consecutive league titles, one Dutch Cup victory and the semi-final of the Champions League.

And, humorously, he played in Brazil's 3-0 victory over Argentina at the Emirates, so already he has one more clean sheet there than Paul Robinson does.*

*Out of respect for Paul, I didn't laugh.

It has since been reported that former PSV right back Lee Young-Pyo has bee included as part of the Gomes deal, with the South Korean heading back to Holland for 800k. This has yet to be confirmed on the official site.
