Defoe agrees new Tottenham contract

Defoe looked set to leave White Hart Lane after spending much of last season on the substitutes' bench, but Andre Villas-Boas, who replaced Harry Redknapp as Spurs boss in the close-season, has reassured the England star that he will feature more often this term.

The 29-year-old, who had gone public with his unhappiness at his lack of first-team action last season, started the first two Premier League games of this season.

That persuaded the 29-year-old former West Ham forward to commit himself to Spurs for another three seasons.

Shortly after being named on Thursday in the England squad for next month's qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, Defoe tweeted: "Fantastic week signed my new contract at spurs and meeting up with England on Monday for 2 important games."

And Spurs confirmed the deal later on Thursday. "We are delighted to announce that Jermain Defoe has signed a new contract until 2015," a statement on Tottenham's website announced.

"The 29-year-old made his 300th First Team appearance against West Brom last weekend and is currently in 10th place in our all-time goalscoring chart with 119 goals for the club."
