Ledley King’s groin injury however, has prevented the Spurs captain from staking his claim in the side at the heart of England’s defence, in the absence from the squad of injured Chelsea defender John Terry.

"I just want to carry on at my best and hopefully take my club form into the international level as well," said Paul Robinson.

"I need a run of games, but most importantly I need to be playing well for my club," said Jermain Defoe.

"I really hope a World Cup place is in my grasp. That's what I've got to aim for," said Michael Carrick.

Spurs coach Martin Jol on the transfer of Jermain Jenas from Newcastle United this week said, "I think Jermaine will be a big addition to our group and will develop into a great player. He will also be our fifth England international."

In the Times newspaper today Nick Szczepanik, with his tongue firmly tucked inside his cheek wrote: ‘An injury to Wayne Rooney and one or two others before the 2010 World Cup could leave England’s destiny in Tottenham’s hands.’
