Gedson Fernandes Set to Join Tottenham as Details of Deal Are Revealed

​Tottenham are set to finalise the signing of Gedson Fernandes from Benfica in one of the 2020 January transfer window's biggest deals.

The Portugal international has been linked with West Ham and Chelsea over the last few weeks, having fallen out of favour at Portuguese club Benfica, but Spurs have ​stormed to the front of the queue in recent days and now look set to conclude the deal.

As reported by ​Fabrizio Romano, the deal will be a loan until 2021, when Spurs will have the option to make the deal permanent for somewhere between €50m and €60m. The journalist also revealed West Ham were never in the running for Fernandes' signature, despite the paper talk.

Fernandes is also said to be 'ready to agree personal terms' ahead of the proposed move.

Tottenham have been struck down by injuries in recent weeks, with a lack of quality central midfielders also proving to be a problem for Jose Mourinho. 


Moussa Sissoko is out until April with an injury he picked up during the 1-0 loss at Southampton, while Harry Winks was overrun against Liverpool thanks to a combination of Mourinho's chosen formation and the Reds' energetic playing style.


However, whether 21-year-old Fernandes will slot straight into central midfield remains to be seen, given that he has played on the right wing and in the hole during his nine appearances in all competitions this campaign.

If Spurs were to make the transfer permanent, it would put Fernandes among their most expensive signings ever. Summer arrival and perennially injured midfielder Tanguy Ndombele tops the list at £54m, with Davinson Sanchez and Moussa Sissoko second and third respectively.


Spurs remain behind in the hunt for ​Champions League qualification in eighth, with their poor first half of the 2019/20 season placing them nine points behind ​Chelsea, while Sheffield United and Wolves currently occupy sixth and seventh.


What Fernandes' arrival means for midfielder Victor Wanyama and Christian Eriksen - both of whom have been linked with January exits - remains to be seen.
