Japhet Tanganga Reveals Desire to Stay at Tottenham for the Rest of His Career

Tottenham are hoping to agree a new contract with Japhet Tanganga following his breakthrough into the first team, with the defender keen to stay for the remainder of his career.

The 20-year-old made his Premier League debut at the weekend against Liverpool, earning praise for how he dealt with Sadio Mane in a 1-0 defeat.

He also started at right-back for Spurs' 2-1 FA Cup third round replay win over Middlesbrough on Tuesday, and Tanganga said he wishes to play for the club for as long as possible.

"I've been at Tottenham for a long time, since I was ten and they've helped me a lot," he said, as quoted by Football.London. "This club is fantastic, the staff, the coaches, everyone has just helped me.

"The club means a lot to me, having been with them for so long. Of course I'd love to stay with them as long as I could and go on until I retire.

"But that's for the club to deal with me and for me to focus on the pitch and deliver as much as I possibly can."

Tanganga's current contract expires at the end of the season, though Jose Mourinho hinted in a press conference that the club have an option to extend that.

Nonetheless, it would be useful for Spurs to tie down one of their most promising youngsters, and Football.London add that the club are confident that terms can be reached over a new deal.

Tanganga is clearly held in high regard by Mourinho, and he revealed what's been discussed with his head coach in what's been a whirlwind week for him.

"He said well done for Liverpool but just keep working," he said. "Keep your head down, keep working for your next opportunity. Stay humble, grounded and keep working."

Tottenham's defensive issues mean Tanganga has a real chance to string together a run in the side. With Jan Vertonghen out of contract at the end of the season and both Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth unimpressive in recent appearances, Mourinho will hope that he's found someone he can depend on.
