Jol will be forced to make changes for derby

He told the Mail: "About a minute earlier, the referee had thanked Edgar for not making a meal of the challenge by (Alan) Smith. Then Edgar does the same thing to Smith and he gets booked."

"It was his first foul and normally in Europe they leave the first one. I like the referee and he let the game flow in the first half, which the players appreciated - but sometimes you need to have a feel for these things and after what went on before, it was a harsh decision."

Martin Jol admitted he has some colossal decision making to, with five days to go before Arsenal’s visit to White Hart Lane.

"That means Edgar will now be suspended and we will be a poorer team because of that," he added in the Sunday Mirror.

Having to make do without Davids was anticipated before the weekend trip to Manchester, but now Jol is also faced with the prospect of having to leave out youngster Aaron Lennon and bringing back Andy Reid and Teemu Tainio to the midfield.

At least it will be an opportunity for Spurs to prove to some doubters, such as former boss David Pleat that Spurs aren’t becoming a one-man team. The out of work coach wrote in The Guardian:

"Davids has tended to be used on the left by Spurs but is limited with his work there. He started out wide (against Manchester United) but was much more influential when he moved into the centre. The team's passing improved and they scored an equaliser.

"We saw the wisdom of giving Davids the platform he prefers. He had more touches and could use his great strengths - his hustling and sharp passing at close quarters under pressure. Davids brought players into the game and allowed Tottenham to get bodies forward. Davids prefers shorter passes and linked the attack better."
