José Mourinho Admits Steven Bergwijn's Season Could Be Over Following Ankle Injury

Tottenham Hotspur head coach José Mourinho has admitted that Steven Bergwijn's season could be over after he picked up an ankle injury during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Burnley.

The Dutchman did actually complete the full 90 minutes at the weekend, suggesting his injury wasn't too bad, but it appears as though that's not the case.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's meeting with RB Leipzig (via Sky Sports), Mourinho simply revealed: "Steven, I don't expect him to play this season."

Well, that's not too bad. Fortunately, Spurs have no other major injury concerns, so everyone will be able to get on just fine without Bergwijn, right?

Oh. Oh yeah.

"Can I believe it? Yes, I can," Mourinho continued. "I have never known it like this, especially speaking about traumatic injuries. Only Harry Kane's injury was not a traumatic injury but a typical injury of the December period in the Premier League.

"Hugo Lloris, [Moussa] Sissoko, Sonny [Son Heung-min], Steven Bergwijn are all traumatic and never for a couple of weeks. That's what it is. We were psychologically more down with the other injures. This one, from three, four or five to six or seven is the same. No problem.

"I am very motivated, very calm, very positive [about the Leipzig clash]. But if you want to imagine Leipzig tomorrow without [Timo] Werner, [Patrik] Schick, [Christopher] Nkunku, [Yussuf] Poulsen, [Emil] Forsberg - I am pretty sure the coach [Julian Nagelsmann] would not be laughing as much as I am now."

Things aren't exactly going well for Spurs on the injury front, but you'll never hear Mourinho mention it. Not once.

Contrastingly, Dele Alli, who accompanied Mourinho at his pre-match press conference, said this wasn't a time for Spurs to complain about their injury crisis.

"That's football. It's obviously very disappointing. This isn't a time to get our violins out," he said, as quoted by football.london. "We have to step up and deal with these situations. It's all a part of it, as disappointing as it is. We have to show our character now as a team and the depth we have in the squad. Everyone needs to step up and those who aren't playing as much need to come through and show why they're here."

Spurs head into Tuesday's game needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit, after Werner's penalty was enough to give Leipzig the win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the first leg.
