Jose Mourinho faces Real Madrid destiny

Last updated : 04 April 2011 By Daily Mail

After losing for the first time at home in nine years on Saturday, Jose Mourinho cannot afford anything but a win against Tottenham. Why? Because he is in the toughest job in football. Real Madrid have had an astonishing 17 different managers since the Champions League began in 1992. Sportsmail looks at the weird and wonderful reasons they failed to keep their jobs and why Mourinho should take note.

Crunch time: Jose Mourinho is under pressure to deliver the Champions League after the club's recent failures

Benito Floro

(June 1992-March 1994)

P 92 W 52 D 21 L 19

Win %: 56.52

Honours: Copa Del Rey, Supercopa de Espana

Reason left: Floro got the job after guiding Albacete to their first ever top-flightpromotion. He won the Spanish Cup in his first season butwas sacked when the league title began to look out of reach. He is now a TV commentator.

Vicente del Bosque (first spell)

(March 1994-May 1994)

P 11 W 5 D 1 L 5

Win %: 45.45

Honours: Supercopa de Espana

Reason left: The former Madrid legend was only ever there in a caretaker role while a successor for Floro was found. He would later return for a much longer, and far more successful spell in charge

? Sign of things to come: Vicente del Bosque would later have a much longer spell in charge

Jorge Valdano?

(May 1994-January 1996)

P 78 W 39 D 17 L 22

Win %: 50

Honours: La Liga

Reason left: The club's current generalmanager was a hit as a player during the 1980s and initially broughtthem success as a coach, winning the league. But things soon turnedsour and a loss at home to RayoVellacano was the final straw.

?Arsenio Iglesias?

(Jan 1996-May 1996)

P 21 W 11 D 4 L 6

Win % 52.38

Honours:None

Reason left: You just cannot lose six of 21 games at Madrid. Especially when there is a preferred candidate on the horizon. Iglesias took a break from coaching but later went on to manage the Galicia national side which is not affiliated with FIFA.

? Popular: Valdano is now the club's general manager having previously led the club to the La Liga title

Fabio Capello (first spell)

(May 1996-June 1997)

P 48 W 31 D 12 L 5

Win % 64.58

Honours: La Liga

Reason left: Capello abandoned hisusual caution to play an exciting three-man attack, with Raul, DavorSuker and Pedrag Mijatovic guiding them to the title. But the fansstill found the style too dour and unadventurous. So off he went despitepipping Barcelona to the title.

Jupp Heynckes

(June 1997-May 1998)

P 53 W 26 D 15 L 12

Win % 49.06

Honours: Supercopa de Espana, UEFAChampions League

Reason left: One of the most harsh sackings. GermanHeynckes did little wrong and won Madrid their first European Cup in 32years. Did they care? No, because he didn't win the league too. A wordof warning for Jose, perhaps.

? Stark contrast: Toshack (left) failed to win a trophy but Heynckes (right) won the European Cup

Guus Hiddink

(May 1998-Feb 1999)

P 34 W 19 D 4 L 11

Win % 55.88

Honours: Intercontinental Cup

Reason left: Not winning enough gamesand criticising the club president is not the best way to keep a job but that's exactly what Hiddink did. He told Lorenzo Sanz the clubneeded to be more professional and you can guess what happened next.

John Toshack

(Feb 1999-Nov 1999)

P 37 W 19 D 9 L 9

Win % 51.35

Honours: None

Reason left: Toshack probably didn'texpect he'd be managing Real when he started his coaching career atSwansea. But impressive spells at smaller clubs in Spain got him thegig. Eighth in the league and public criticism of some of the club'sstars lost him it.

In the hotseat: Hiddink was soon treading on thin ice after criticising the club's hierarchy

Vicente del Bosque (second spell)

(Nov 1999-June 2003)

P 233 W 127 D 56 L 50

Win % 54.41

Honours: La Liga (2), UEFA ChampionsLeague (2), Supercopa de Espana (2), UEFA Super Cup, IntercontinentalCup

Reason left: Del Bosque came back for a proper go at the job andwas a huge success. He won trophy after trophy, moulded Zidane, Ronaldoand Figo into the same team and was massively popular. Then, bizarrely, the day after he won Madrid their 29th league title, he was not offereda new deal, instead a director of football role. Shocked, he turned itdown.

Carlos Queiroz

(June 2003-May 2004)

P 59 W 34 D 11 L 14

Win % 57.63

Honours: Supercopa de Espana

Reason left: Club president FlorentinoPerez later admitted appointing the Manchester United No 2 was amistake. Queiroz was overruled on transfers, with the club sellingClaude Makelele against his wishes and his unhappy spell came to an endafter the club finished a lowly fourth in the league. He was recently named as the new manager of Iran.

Iberian flair? Camacho (left) and Queiroz (right) both had short spells at Real Mardrid

Jose Antonio Camacho

(June 2004-July 2004)

P 6 W 4 D 0 L 2

Win % 66.67

Honours: None

Reason left: The former Madrid leftback was given a two-year deal but resigned because he felt the teamwere not responding to his training methods.

'I decided to go because the team wasn't going to get better with me. I have a way of training and it didn't seem like it would make any difference at Real. I had Florentino Perez's support but I went because I wasn't going to be able to get the team to perform.'

Mariano Garcia Remon

(July 2004-Dec 2004)

P 20 W 12 D 4 L 4

Win % 60

Honours: None

Reason left: Remon was Camacho's No 2and came in as caretaker, only to be sacked two weeks after committing the unforgiveable sin of leavingRonaldo out against Sevilla.

He had made almost 200 appearances for the club in goal but that wasn't enough to save his job

Remon had a short spell in charge of Cadiz but failed to guide the club to promotion.

Unforgivable: Remon made the mistake of leaving Ronaldo out of his Madrid side

Vanderlei Luxemburgo

(Dec 2004-Dec 2005)

P 45 W 28 D 7 L 10

Win % 62.22

Honours: None

Reason left: After initial success whenhe took over from Remon - they only lost the league by four points -the Brazilian soon lost his magic touch. A bizarre effort to play a4-2-2-2 formation dubbed the Magic Rectangle backfired and a defeat athome to Barcelona sealed his fate.

'I was sacked because of bad resultsbut I was convinced we were going to win something. I was surprisedwhen they sacked me because it was strange that such a big club didn'tunderstand my footballing philosophy. I still left proud of what I didthere.'

Juan Ramon Lopez Caro

(Dec 2005-July2006)

P 48 W 23 D 13 L 12

Win % 47.92

Honours: None

Reason left: Replaced Luxemburgo, moving up from training Real Madrid B. But the club were always lookingaround for another manager and he won a lower percentage of games thanany manager since the 1990s.

He went on to manage a string of clubs including Racing Santander, Levante, Celta and the Spanish Under 21 side.

Is now in charge at Russian side FC Vaslui on a lucrative ?3m contract

Tinkerman: Luxemburgo's bizarre formation helped cost him his job

Fabio Capello (second spell)

(July 2006-June 2007)

P 50 W 28 D 12 L 10

Win % 56

Honours: La Liga

Reason left: Proof once again that winning the league was not enough.

Poor old Fabio received his marching orders for a second time because the club wanted a 'more enthusiastic style of play.'

Bernd Schuster

(July 2007-Dec 2008)

P 75 W 44 D 9 L 22

Win % 58.67

Honours: La Liga, Supercopa de Espana

Reason left: Schuster gave the fanstheir attacking style of play as his side romped to the league title. But things soonturned sour. The German felt his side couldn't compete with theemerging Barcelona and said so publicly ahead of the Clasico. He waspromptly fired.

Style over success? Capello (left) failed to deliver an exciting team; Schuster did, but didn't stay long

Juande Ramos

(Dec 2008-June 2009)

P 27 W 18 D 1 L 8

Win % 66.67

Honours: None

Reason left: Ramos was at a loose endafter his disastrous spell with Tottenham and steadied the ship. Hetook an impressive 49 from 51 points at first but a 6-2 defeat toBarcelona led to a slump and his contract not being extended.

?Manuel Pellegrini

(July 2009-May 2010)

P 48 W 36 D 5 L 7

Win% 75

Honours: None

Reason left: The Chilean had beenhugely successful at Villarreal but taking on Pep Guardiola's Barcaproved a challenge too many. He only lost three games but failure inthe Champions League meant he could not hang on, despite achieving arecord 96 points for the club in the league.

Jose Mourinho

(May 2010-present)

P 44 W 34 D 7 L 3

Win % 77.27

Honours: None yet

Reason left: Only time will tell. Real have all but lost the La Liga title to Barcelona but have at least qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals. Mourinho has said publicly that he wants to return to England and may get his wish come the summer if he doesn't deliver.?
