Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho is not thought to be at risk of being sacked this season, despite overseeing a poor run of results in recent months.
Mourinho has overseen some good results this season and his team looked like genuine Premier League title contenders in October and November, even going top of the table at one stage following impressive autumn wins over Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal.
But Spurs haven’t put back-to-back league wins together since November. They have lost five of their last 10 Premier League fixtures and only ended a run of three consecutive league defeats by winning at home against a West Brom side more than 10 points adrift of safety.
Having finally chalked up an overdue victory, Mourinho then saw his Spurs team exit the FA Cup in extra-time against Everton. He was brought in to win trophies and that sees another chance of silverware disappear, although he has still guided the club to the Carabao Cup final in April.
Mourinho’s usual pragmatism, that often dispenses with style in favour of results, isn’t proving to be worth the trade-off for Spurs at the moment and the Daily Mirror reports that there are doubts from senior members of the squad about his man management – Eric Dier in particular is said to be struggling for confidence, while Harry Winks has mysteriously become a fringe player.
Plenty of bookmakers have made Mourinho the favourite to be next Premier League manager sacked, although the Mirror points out that his ‘stock’ with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is still high and there is virtually no chance of that changing before the summer at least.
As far as the Premier League is concerned, Spurs face a battle just to finish in the top four, having previously missed out last season as well. They are only four points behind fourth place Liverpool and things could very quickly change, but they haven’t shown anything like the type of consistency in recent months that will erase that gap and propel them into the Champions League places.
