Manchester City 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur: Player ratings as Gundogan masterclass makes Spurs pay

Manchester City continued their winning streak on Saturday afternoon, comfortably beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at the Etihad stadium.

Spurs almost took the lead early on, when Harry Kane rattled the crossbar with a whipped free-kick from the edge of the box. However, it was the Citizens who struck first, when Ilkay Gundogan was brought down in the penalty area and Rodri (alas, not Ederson) stepped up to slot home the spot-kick.

Man City doubled their lead less than five minutes into the second half, when Gundogan rounded off a brilliant attacking move, firing into the near post from a cutting Raheem Sterling pass. The hosts put the game to bed on 66 minutes, when Gundogan bagged his second of the game, bringing the ball down from the stratosphere with a deft touch, and drilling past Hugo Lloris.

Spurs had no answer to the Citizens' ruthlessness, and Pep Guardiola's men saw out the final half an hour with ease.

MANCHESTER CITY

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Ederson (GK) - 7/10 - Looked a bit miffed not to take the penalty - as we all were. The Brazilian made three saves but, more importantly, got a cheeky assist for the third.

Joao Cancelo (RB) - 8/10 - A superb performance from a player who looks right at home in this defence. Cancelo nullified Son comfortably in the first half, and constantly drove forward in search of a crossing opportunity to feed his teammates.

John Stones (CB) - 8/10 - Led the defence in Dias' absence. Defended monstrously, and then contributed so much to the final third, helping Man City progress up the pitch with excellent passing and dribbling. This may be the best version of Stones that we've ever seen.

Aymeric Laporte (CB) - 7/10 - Stepped in to replace Dias. Gave away the free-kick which almost handed Spurs the lead. Appeared at ease however, and didn't look like a man who has hardly featured in recent weeks.

Oleksandar Zinchenko (LB) - 7/10 - Impressed on that left flank, keeping Lamela at bay. A danger in the opposition's half, and a constant outlet for his teammates.

2. Midfielders

Bernardo Silva (CM) - 7/10 - A busy display. Buzzed around the middle of the park, and often picked up positions on the right to cut in and threaten from wide.

Rodri (CM) - 8/10 - Sent Ederson back into his own half and dispatched the penalty himself - only just, though. Controlled the game well from the base of the midfield.

Ilkay Gundogan (CM) - 10/10 - Won the spot-kick with a clever passage of play on the left side of the penalty area. Ghosted into the box to drive a second beyond Lloris. Absolutely wow wow wow for the third. Unbelievable control and finish.

3. Forwards

Phil Foden (RW) - 7/10 - Darted around, trying to turn Davies inside out. Got the better of his marker on a few occasions, but wasn't as dangerous as in previous matches.

Gabriel Jesus (ST) - 7/10 - Had two bites at the cherry early on - both blocked. Enjoyed a running battle with the fiery Lamela. Fired over when unmarked in the box at the end of the first half.

Raheem Sterling (LW) - 8/10 - Offered a couple of stray passes into the centre of the park, which were salvaged by sprawling teammates. Provided a moment of magic to lay on the second though, drawing the defence in his direction before cutting them apart with one ball. Beautiful.

Riyad Mahrez (RW) - 6/10

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Hugo Lloris (GK) - 5/10 - Got a hand to the penalty, but couldn't do enough to turn it around the post. He'll be even more annoyed by his efforts to stop the second. Wrist workouts needed.

Japhet Tanganga (RB) - 6/10 - Back in the side, and a fairly solid display, considering. Kept Sterling quiet in the first half, regularly forcing him to turn away from goal. Hard to blame him when chucked into the deep end.

Davinson Sanchez (CB) - 4/10 - Threw himself in front of goal-bound shots on a couple of occasions. Completely bamboozled by Sterling's movement for the second goal; turned into a meme by Gundogan on the third.

Eric Dier (CB) - 5/10 - Did little to stop Sterling walking through the defence, and didn't cover Sanchez once he'd been drawn away from his position. A disorganised backline.

Ben Davies (LB) - 5/10 - Did his best to slow Foden down, and recovered well to stop the youngster from going through on goal on one occasion in the first half. Absolutely torn to bits by Sterling in the second half, though. A painful 45 minutes.

6. Midfielders

Tanguy Ndombele (CM) - 7/10 - A glorious player to watch in full flow. Went coast to coast in the first half, but was awarded few passing options, and Man City closed the door. Couldn't inspire those around him. Subbed - again.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CM) - 5/10 - Uncharacteristically handed the initiative to the hosts with a mindless challenge in a harmless area of the box. A moment of madness in the circumstances.

Lucas Moura (AM) - 5/10 - Defensively positioned to man-mark Rodri in the middle, stopping Man City from moving the ball as fluidly. Didn't really work. On the attack, he looked lost and was hooked at half-time.

7. Forwards

Erik Lamela (RW) - 5/10 - Picked up a classic Lamela booking and threw in some mad challenges. Did nothing productive in the final third.

Harry Kane (ST) - 6/10 - Smacked the crossbar with a beautiful free-kick - so close. Completely isolated in the second half - a penny for his thoughts?

Son Heung-min (LW) - 5/10 - Extremely subdued. Forced into playing an almost left-wing back role, defending deep and hoofing the ball away from danger time after time. Little chance to make any impact.
