Michel Vorm Announces Retirement From Football

Former Tottenham and Netherlands goalkeeper Michel Vorm has announced his retirement from football at the age of 37.

Vorm had been without a club since departing the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

The Dutchman began his career with Utrecht in his native Holland before moving to Swansea in 2011. He would play out the remainder of his career in the Premier League, joining Tottenham in 2014 after three hugely successful seasons in south Wales.

He initially left Tottenham at the end of the 2018/19 season, before returning four months later on a short term deal following an injury to Hugo Lloris.

Vorm was also capped 15 times by the Netherlands, and was included in the Dutch squad for both the 2010 and 2014 World Cup, as well as the 2012 European Championship.

He announced the news on Instagram, writing: “I am grateful to have been able to play for all these clubs and I am honoured to have been able to represent my country in international tournaments. I am immensely grateful to be a part of such a great history.

"A gold medal at the European Under-21 Championship, a silver medal at the 2010 World Cup and a bronze medal at the 2014 World Cup.”

The former Swansea man's final professional appearance came for Tottenham in March as Spurs lost to Norwich on penalties in the last 16 of the FA Cup.

A statement released on Tottenham's official website read: "Michel’s daily work with skipper and number one Hugo over the years cannot be underestimated, as well as his influence on our younger goalkeepers, the likes of Alfie Whiteman and Brandon Austin.

"Indeed, it’s away from matchdays and friendships forged over his six years with us that have left a lasting impression on the former Dutch international from Ijsselstein, Utrecht – he’s made friends for life."
