New deals for Jenas and Dawson

Amid David Bentley's medical and the club announcing a press conference to be held tomorrow morning, Juande Ramos and Daniel Levy have been hard at work securing the long term future of two of the clubs current players - Michael Dawson and Jermaine Jenas. The pair, who enjoyed contrasting seasons last year, have extended their current contracts until 2013.

Fresh from his best season for the club since joining from Newcastle in August 2005, the extension to Jenas' contract is a sure sign that he remains in Ramos' plans despite the Spaniard's radical shake-up of the playing staff at White Hart Lane.

Jenas has made 111 appearances for the club so far, weighing in with 21 goals, but has been criticised since joining for his inconsistency and lack of steel. However such was Jenas' good form last year that he earned a recall to Fabio Capello's England side, the midfielder scoring the first goal of the Italians tenure against Switzerland at Wembley.

New deals: Jenas and Dawson enjoyed contrasting fortunes last year

Question marks still remain about his role in Ramos' new look Tottenham side and, with the squad lacking a quality defensive midfielder, Jenas may find opportunities limited such a player was to arrive at the club.

In contrast to the progress made by Jermaine, Michael Dawson endured a torrid campaign last year, and the former Nottingham Forest man struggled at the heart of a leaky defence. Despite this, Dawson has shown over the past three seasons that he has a role to play at the club and his new deal reflects this.

It is thought that Ramos is looking to add another centre-back to his side over the coming weeks and it is likely that he has made it clear to Dawson that his position may be under threat, especially if Ledley King continues to recover from a long term injury. That said, Dawson has promise and if he can cut out the lapses in concentration that have blighted his last 12 months at the club, he will be a useful back-up for our first choice centre-back pairing.

Meanwhile winger David Bentley underwent a medical this afternoon ahead of a proposed £17m move from Blackburn. The deal is likely to be concluded this evening with the club set to announce the signing at a press conference at 10am tomorrow morning. As the club tend to shy away from such conferences there may well be a few surprises, with rumours of moves for Argentinian forward Diego Milito and Russian star Andrey Arshavin circulating among the national media.
