Peter Crouch has thanked the Liverpool fans he assumes took part in Tottenham's recent Twitter poll after he was voted the club's best 'Striker of the Decade', ahead of Harry Kane.
The former striker had one full season with the club during the last decade, netting 11 goals in 45 appearances across the 2010/11 campaign, meanwhile his main competitor, Kane, has only managed to muster a measly 181.
Both strikers were placed in a poll on Spurs' official Twitter page alongside Jermain Defoe, with readers asked to vote for their best striker of the last ten years. With it largely expected that Kane would take the number one spot with relative ease, Crouch ended up winning by something of a landslide, running away with 61% of the near 600k votes cast.
The results were, it's fair to say, unexpected, with many fans agreeing that there must have been some outside influence from rivals clubs to produce such an outcome. The overwhelming response was that Liverpool fans intervened, where Crouch is a popular figure having netted 42 goals for the club over a three-year spell.
Working as a pundit for BT Sport on New Year’s Day, Crouch was congratulated on winning the vote by presenter Jake Humphrey.
I think it’s a close one but Harry just edges it for me— Peter Crouch (@petercrouch) December 30, 2019
"We should start by saying how honoured we both are to be alongside Tottenham’s greatest striker of the past decade," Humphrey joked, as quoted by football.london. "Congratulations, I’m sure that went down well in the Kane household."
"Yes, I’m not quite sure how that’s happened but I’ll take it, I’ll take it," Crouch responded.
Before Humphrey then said: "I think we know, I think we know. The Liverpool fans…"
And the 38-year-old was in agreement about where the votes may have come from, adding: "They’ve been good to me, they’ve been good to me."
Crouch scored 205 goals across a 735-game career, turning out for a number of clubs and winning over supporters everywhere he went. Without evidence to prove otherwise, it looks as if the Spurs fans were wooed themselves.
