Ramos sets his sights on Modric

The club have held discussions with Dinamo Zagreb regarding the possibility of signing Croatian international Luka Modric, claims a report on The Times website.

The twenty-two year old playmaker has attracted the interest of some of the biggest clubs in Europe but it appears that the club feel they can steal a march on any potential rival by tabling their offer as early as possible.

Ramos' pursuit of Modric is a clear indication that the Spaniard has identified a lack of creativity in the centre of his midfield, a problem that has hampered the club for as long as supporters can remember. Modric, who was a key member of the Croatia side that beat England at Wembley in November, can play in an attacking role in the centre of midfield or wide on the left.

With his signature coveted by the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea, it remains to be seen whether Ramos can persuade Modric to swap Zagreb for North London. It is thought that the Croatian side would demand in the region of £18m for their star player, which would represent a hefty chunk of the budget available to the Spaniard.

Modric is just one of the multitude of players the club are looking to bring in before next season . Ramos has become increasingly disillusioned with several members of his first team squad after recent abject performances, with Paul Robinson and Pascal Chimbonda likely to head a substantial summer exodus.

The pre-season represents Ramos' first chance to have a substantial amount of time to mould the team to his liking, free from the pressure of competitive fixtures. Even if the Modric deal falls through, fans can expect a very busy summer.
