Redknapp names his greatest ever Spurs team

Just take the goalkeepers: “Ted Ditchburn was a phenominal keeper, but so too was Bill Brown, and Ray Clemence of course, but I’m going for big Pat Jennings, who also did ever so well for Arsenal when Spurs let him go.”

And so it went on, for every position, each department in most the most extensive vote ever undertaken, polled from players, fans and pundits.

Redknapp wanted to pick Stevie Perryman in midfield, but then realised there were so many terrific players in that area, so he reluctantly switched Perryman to full back when he had orginally selected Joe Kinnear.

He said: “Perryman played 600 games for the club, he is Tottenham through and through, and you couldn’t pick a Spurs greats without him. But I see him as a midfield player. But while I would have picked Joe Kinnear at right back, I have too many midfield players to pick form.

“In midfield, I’d go for Mackay every time as he is a fantastic player, but I need to free up room in midfield to find room for Gazza even at the expense of Modric and Ardiles. Ideally I would have played Dave in midfield but have moved him to the defence where he played for Derby, when I would have gone for Maurice Norman alongside Mike England. After a lot of agonsiing the midfield is Hoddle, Blanchflower and Gazza. I have to go for Blanchflower as he was the captain of that fabulous Double team.

“So I’ve gone for a 4-3-3 and up front I would have Cliff Jones on the right and Gareth Bale on the left. Gareth gets in for sure, he is a certain as he iss one of the top four players in the world!

“In the middle of the attack the best of the lot for me, Jimmy Greaves, even though the club has had some terrific goalscoring talent such as Lineker, Klinsmans, Greaves, Sheringham.”

Perryman, England, Mackay, Knowles.

Hoddle, Gazza, Blanchflower.
