Sir Alex Ferguson Wanted Mauricio Pochettino to Succeed Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

Legendary former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Mauricio Pochettino to succeed Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford following the 'Special One's' departure in December 2018.

Instead, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would take the reins as interim boss before the Norwegian was eventually handed the role permanently after overseeing an impressive upturn in form.

Despite guiding the Red Devils to an unlikely Champions League spot after the restart last season and masterminding superb European victories over Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig already this term, the inconsistency of this United side has called Solskjaer's credentials into question.

And with Pochettino out of work since his Tottenham exit last November, many are wondering why the United hierarchy are yet to make their move for the Argentine.

In the wake of Solskjaer's permanent appointment back in March 2019, the Daily Mail reported that Ferguson in fact wanted Pochettino to take over at Old Trafford as opposed to his former player - who he supposedly still has a fine relationship with.

Nevertheless, the Scotsman believed the then-Spurs boss was the best in the business, and thought it was United's duty to hire only the elite.

Pochettino would go on to take the Lilywhites to a Champions League final to round off the 2018/19 campaign, before a horrible run of results saw him sacked four months into 2019/20, with Mourinho his successor.

Nevertheless, the Argentine returned to our TV screens for the first time in a while as he appeared on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

Predictably, Pochettino was asked about his potential return to management, to which he replied: "I always feel ready to be involved in the game. It is my passion, not my job.

"My energy is full and I love to be involved in the game. But at the same time, I need to understand that it is a good moment to wait.

"I learned when I was really young that football will dictate your way. I am waiting to feel which is the right project to take," he concluded.
