Social Media Roundup: How Tottenham Players Are Doing Following Football Postponement

Even though Tottenham have had a 2020 to forget so far - with Jose Mourinho going winless for six games for the first time in his career - fans of the Lilywhites are just as forlorn as anyone at the prospect of no football to watch this weekend.


The Premier League was all set to go ahead with this weekend's fixtures despite public health concerns, before the decision was reversed after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive for COVID-19.


With football taking a break until at least April, it's been a quiet week for Spurs players on the web - perhaps understandably after a chastening 4-0 aggregate defeat to Leipzig. However, veteran defender Toby Alderweireld used his social media to address the fans during the time of crisis.

​​With footballers across the world now resorting to alternative ways of passing the time on a Sunday afternoon, Alderweireld's defensive partner-in-crime Jan Vertonghen could be seen taking a trip down memory lane with his old club Ajax on Twitter. 

The Amsterdam club were taking advantage of the lack of present-day football to celebrate a '#RetroMatchday', 'live-tweeting' a 2011 clash with FC Twente where Siem de Jong scored twice to hand Frank de Boer's side their first title since 2004. Vertonghen was quick to signal his approval of former teammate Christian Eriksen's team selection.

Club talisman Harry Kane has been taking a break from social media over the last few days and Son Heung-min has been similarly quiet during his mandatory 14-day quarantine after returning from surgery in South Korea. However, many other Spurs players look to have been making the most of some time off with their family after a stressful season.

​​Though Erik Lamela was just starting to get going again for Spurs after a season plagued by recurring injury problems, he seems to be enjoying some quality time with his son, whilst his fellow South American Lucas Moura lifted the mood with a romantic Instagram post.

With the White Hart Lane turnstiles closed this weekend, Spurs' official Instagram account decided to throw it back to happier times, and Spurs cult hero Sandro couldn't resist showing his appreciation in the comments after this screamer was dredged up from the archives.

Whilst the Spurs players are probably secretly a bit relieved to have some R&R after an often nightmarish season, you have to hope they're not taking film recommendations from departing midfielder Victor Wanyama...
