Son Heung-min Insists He Is 'Not Among the Best Players' Despite Stunning Form

Son Heung-min’s humble nature is rather, well...humbling.

Despite a flying start to the 2020/21 season with Tottenham, which has now seen him win October’s Player of the Month award, and 87 goals in all competitions since the start of the 2016/17 campaign, he still refuses to believe he is among the best in the Premier League - even though it is true.

Son’s latest Player of the Month is his third since arriving in England and he currently jointly leads the Premier League Golden Boot race. As things stand, the 28-year-old is also well on course to score more than 20 goals in a league campaign for the first time and over 30 in all competitions.

Perhaps the secret to his success, which is pushing Tottenham into contention for the Premier League title this season, is that he never settles or believes he has ‘made it’, so to speak.

“I've never once thought I am among the best players in the Premier League. Honestly, I’ve never thought that for a moment,” Son is quoted as saying by Goal while on international duty.

“I have always tried to do my best for Tottenham and in the national team and try to show all my abilities,” he added.

Son also explained that his on-field relationship with Harry Kane, which has reached new levels this season as the pair regularly exchange assists and create chances, is the result of hard work and time.

“Kane and I have played together for a long time. It's common to try to develop [the partnership] at every moment. He is younger than me, but he always plays hard,” Spurs’ number seven explained.

After representing South Korea in international friendlies against Mexico and Qatar in the coming days, both hosted in Austria, Son will return to club duty for a challenging but crucial run of Spurs fixtures against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal between 21 November and 5 December.
