Spurs Striker Troy Parrott Missed Out on Loan Move by Just Four Days Thanks to UEFA Rule

Young Tottenham Hotspur striker Troy Parrott was hopeful of sealing a loan move away from north London during the January transfer window, but his hopes of securing first team experience were dashed due to UEFA regulations.

The 17-year-old looked set to join a Championship side on loan, with Charlton and QPR, in addition to Burnley and Dutch outfit ADO Den Haag all interested in the promising young striker.

However, Spurs and Parrott were reminded late on that a UEFA law concerning club-trained players prevented him from moving – at least without causing them trouble down the line.

According to the Telegraph, the rule states that players must be registered at a club for three years before they qualify as a club-trained player for UEFA competitions.

Parrott joined Spurs as a 15-year-old, and turns 18 on 4th February. After his 18th birthday, he could have moved away from Spurs on loan and still have counted as a club-trained player, meaning that he missed out on half a season away from the club by just four days.

Although this appears positive news for the youngster in the long term, Spurs making sure he'll be easily available for future European squads, in the short term it means Parrot is unlikely to see any first team football this season – manager Jose Mourinho insisting he is not ready for major time despite the absence of Harry Kane.

This is bad news for Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy, who has already awarded Parrott his first senior cap but faces a tough decision as to whether he can justify selecting a talented forward who has not played regular first team football for his Euro 2020 playoff squad.

The arrival of Steven Bergwijn has dropped Parrott further down in the Tottenham pecking order, meaning he is likely to be restricted to Under-23 appearances through until the end of the season.
