Tottenham Hotspur Women have confirmed that long-serving joint head coaches Karen Hills and Juan Amoros have left the club with immediate effect.
Hills and Amoros joined Spurs when the club was an amateur setup competing in the fourth tier of the women’s football league ladder. Together they went on to mastermind the rise to the Women’s Super League and the switch to full-time professional status.
But Spurs, having enjoyed a respectable seventh place WSL finish last season, are struggling to kick on and realise growing ambitions. As things stand, they are one of only two WSL clubs without a win this season and are in danger of becoming embroiled in a relegation battle.
The club has come to the conclusion that Hills and Amoros have taken Spurs as far as they can and it is now necessary for someone new to pick up the reins for the next chapter.
“This decision has not been taken lightly and has been made in the best interests of the team, with the belief that a fresh approach will offer renewed impetus as we seek to continue our upward trajectory and positive growth,” a club statement explained.
“We fully recognise and appreciate the contributions of Karen and Juan during their time with the club, helping elevate the team from amateur level to become a fully professional side in the Women’s Super League and we thank them both for their hard work and length of service.”
Their final game in charge was a 2-2 draw in a north London derby against Arsenal in the Continental Cup, which ended in a penalty shootout defeat when high-profile summer signing Alex Morgan, in only her third appearance, missed the decisive spot kick.
