Steven Bergwijn Urges PSV to Let Him Join Spurs - But Agreement Yet to Be Reached Over Fee

Exclusive - Steven Bergwijn has urged PSV to allow him to join Tottenham before the January transfer window closes, but the two clubs are yet to reach an agreement over a fee.

The 22-year-old has emerged as one of Europe's hottest prospects over the last few seasons, and is now keen on leaving the Eredivisie for the Premier League.

A source has told 90min that the Netherlands international has asked his current club to sanction a move to Spurs, but a deal still needs to be ironed out.

Tottenham's opening bid of £25m was rejected out of hand by PSV, who are hoping to receive £35m from the sale of Bergwijn. However, Spurs could secure his services for just over £25m.

Another source has told 90min that the club have wanted Bergwijn dating back a couple of years to when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge, but no deal was ever close to being agreed or even discussed at length with PSV.

The winger featured for the Boeren against Spurs last season in the Champions League during the group stage, but was unable to prevent a 2-1 loss at Wembley.

Bergwijn has scored five goals and registered 10 assists in 16 Eredivisie games so far this season, but PSV find themselves in fifth place, 11 points behind table-topping Ajax.

They were also knocked out of the Europa League after finishing third in their group, and so with PSV essentially out of the running on two fronts, a January move to a major European club could help Bergwijn's chances of featuring for the Netherlands at Euro 2020.

With Memphis Depay likely to miss the tournament through injury and Ronald Koeman often opting against playing a natural striker, Bergwijn could stake a claim for a starting spot should he move to Spurs and prove an instant hit.

Tottenham's squad is in need of refreshing, and a move for a young player of Bergwijn's quality would represent a very good deal at face value.
