Tim Sherwood Tips Tottenham Defender for 2019 Exit After Omission From Starting XI in Arsenal Loss

Former Tottenham and Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has claimed that Toby Alderweireld will likely leave Spurs in 2019 after his omission from the starting XI in the club's 4-2 loss to Arsenal.

The Belgium international was benched in favour of Juan Foyth, who made a mistake leading to Alexandre Lacazette's deflected winner, and Jan Vertonghen, who gave away a penalty and was later sent off.

Alderweireld has played a lot of games during Vertonghen's injury absence but Sherwood claimed his omission may be a hint that Spurs are looking towards the future, with the 29-year-old possibly leaving when his contract expires next year.

He told Sky Sports' The Debate"I was surprised when I saw Alderweireld was not in the starting lineup. I know Tottenham are looking for the future, because Alderweireld will almost certainly not be at the football club next year."

Alderweireld was heavily linked with an exit over the summer, with Manchester United reportedly eyeing up a move for the former Atletico Madrid and Southampton man, but a move away never materialised.

While Vertonghen is regarded as one of the best centre backs in the Premier League, Foyth has shown lapses in judgement during his recent run in the team.

The Argentina international gave away two penalties on his Premier League debut when Tottenham beat Wolves and mis-kicked a pass during the north London derby defeat, allowing Lacazette to profit.

Spurs still retain the option to extend Alderweireld's contract by another year, at which point he would be able to leave for just £25m.
