Tom to stay, Keane to leave?

Tom Huddlestone has quashed rumours of his possible departure from White Hart Lane this summer by signing a new five year contract.

The burly England Under-21 international joined the club from Derby County in 2005 and enjoyed a sustained run in the first team during the first few months of Jaunde Ramos' tenure. Despite this, there had been speculation in the national press that he was surplus to requirements, with Everton and Middlesbrough thought to be among the clubs interested in his signature.

Huddlestone's new contract expires in 2013 and he joins Jamie O'Hara as two of the side's current midfielders to be reassured they have a future at the club. A degree of doubt now falls on the likes of Didier Zokora and Teemu Tainio, especially as Ramos is actively seeking a more combative central midfielder to compliment new signing Luka Modric.

It was also confirmed today that they club have signed Italian youth goalkeeper Mirko Ranieri, who, at just 16, stands at 6ft 2.

"Mirko is an excellent shot-stopper," said sporting director Damien Comolli.

"His distribution and decision-making is improving all the time.

"He is a highly intelligent individual and another very good young goalkeeper we have attracted to the club."

Uncertainty continues to surround the current incumbent of the number one jersey, Paul Robinson.

Despite the imminent arrival of PSV's Heurelho Gomes, it remains unlikely that Juande Ramos will let Robinson leave without first purchasing another keeper able to deputise for the Brazilian. At the moment Ben Alnwick would be the Spaniard's only option, with former Sunderland stopper some way off being able to face up to the rigours of Premiership football.

Confusion also clouds the future of Robbie Keane, with rumours rife across the web that the talismanic striker has told officials at the club that he wants to leave to join Liverpool.

Keane is adored by the White Hart Lane faithful and only two months ago stated his desire to end his career at the club. That said, the public interest from the team he supported as a boy is likely to test that resolve significantly.

Liverpool have apparently offered Peter Crouch plus £10m for Ireland's top scorer, who topped off another superb season by scoring his 100th Premiership goal of his career.

Seeing as though Ramos has a demonstrated the club's ambition and his own ability over the past few months it remains distinctly unlikely that he will allow one of his prize assets to leave for a club who we should view as our main rivals for a Champions League qualification spot. Yet I'm sure I won't be the only Tottenham fan sleeping slightly less comfortably over the next couple of weeks.
