Tottenham and England Legend Jimmy Greaves Being Treated in Hospital for Unspecified Illness

Former England and Tottenham striker Jimmy Greaves is being treated in hospital for an unspecified illness.

The 80-year-old is Spurs' all-time top scorer with 220 league goals and he was also part of the Three Lions team that lifted the 1966 World Cup - though he missed out on a place in the final to hat trick hero Geoff Hurst.

Tottenham announced the news in a statement posted on Twitter.

"We can confirm that our record goalscorer Jimmy Greaves is currently being treated in hospital. We are in touch with his family and will provide further updates in due course," it read.

"Everybody at the Club sends their best wishes to Jimmy and his family."

Further information regarding Greaves' condition was then released on a Facebook page run by one of his close friends.

"I can confirm Jimmy is in hospital tonight. We will release a statement tomorrow regarding the condition, please, please respect the family and if you are press do not phone his home tonight," the statement said.

Greaves began his career at Chelsea in 1957, before his impressive scoring record earned him a transfer to Milan four years later. After struggling to settle in Italy, he turned down a return to Stamford Bridge in favour of a move to Spurs.

Greaves starred for a Lilywhites team that won two FA Cups as well as the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1963. He departed the club after nine successful years in 1970. Spells at West Ham and a smattering of lower league clubs followed before he finally hung up his scoring boots in 1980.

After his playing career ended, Greaves enjoyed time as a columnist and television presenter throughout the 1980s and 1990s, also releasing an autobiography in 2003.
