Tottenham Hotspur full back Matt Doherty has tested positive for coronavirus, the Irish FA has confirmed.
Doherty - along with Ireland teammate James McClean, who also returned a positive result - completed 90 minutes on Sunday afternoon as Ireland fell to a 1-0 defeat to Wales in their UEFA Nations League group. During the contest, Doherty was beaten in the air by clubmate Gareth Bale for David Brooks' winner.
The Irish FA wrote on their official Twitter page: "The Football Association of Ireland can confirm Matt Doherty and James McClean have tested positive for COVID-19.
"The players have been isolated from the group as per COVID-19 protocols, and the HSE have been informed of this development.
"The rest of the staff and squad tested negative ahead of the flight back to Dublin this morning before the match against Bulgaria on Wednesday."
It is not disclosed whether Doherty is showing any symptoms, which could impact the length of his isolation. Either way, Jose Mourinho will be without the 28-year-old, who must return a negative test before rejoining training, for Spurs' upcoming Premier League bout with Manchester City on Saturday.
Stephen Kenny's reign as Ireland boss, meanwhile, has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic as he's previously had to plan without strikers Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah for the crucial Euro 2020 playoff defeat to Slovakia after they were deemed close contacts to a positive case.
Five players were then ruled out of the Nations League home game with Wales with Kenny finding out the news on the day of the game.
Callum Robinson and Alan Browne have also tested positive over the course of the November break, with Kenny set to be without a number of stars for their crucial clash with Bulgaria on Wednesday.
Defeat for the Irish at the Aviva Stadium will see them relegated from League B in the competition.
