Tottenham Eager to Tie Son Heung-min Down to New Contract

Tottenham Hotspur have made tying South Korean forward Son Heung-min down to a new contract their top priority for the coming months.

Son will have two years remaining on his deal at the end of the current season, and while there is no immediate rush to get things done, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would like to get it sorted soon to avoid any pressure from elsewhere.

There would be no shortage of suitors if Son did hit the market, with the 28-year-old's tally of eight goals and four assists from just seven games this season likely to have attracted plenty of attention, and The Telegraph state that Spurs are keen to reward Son for his good form.

He is expected to receive a hefty increase on his current salary, which is believed to sit around the £110,000-a-week mark.

Levy is still said to regret Christian Eriksen's departure from the club in January. Spurs allowed the Dane to run his contract down and were eventually forced to sell him to Inter for a bargain price, despite his status as one of the Premier League's finest midfielders.

As a result, there is now an active effort to try and prevent star players from entering the final two years of their deals.

There will also be discussions over the future of right-back Serge Aurier. The Ivorian has entered the final year of his contract, but there are yet to be any talks over an extension as the club had hoped to offload him to AC Milan during the summer.

Érik Lamela's future will also need figuring out. His contract expires in 2022, but his status as a regular part of José Mourinho's first-team squad will mean Spurs will have to make a decision on his future soon.

It's been a real mixed bag for Spurs this season. Dominant wins over Manchester United and Southampton have been balanced out by crushing draws with Newcastle and West Ham - the latter of which will have been particularly frustrating for Mourinho.

Spurs held a comfortable 3-0 lead but capitulated in the final eight minutes of the game, allowing their cross-town rivals to storm back and snatch a point in dramatic fashion.
