Tottenham hold talks with Roma over Nicolo Zaniolo

Tottenham have held talks with Roma over the potential signing of Nicolo Zaniolo, 90min understands.

Spurs are on the hunt for major squad reinforcements having qualified for the Champions League, with Antonio Conte committing his immediate future to the club and owners ENIC pumping £150m into team operations already this summer. They have also already secured the signings of Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster and Yves Bissouma.

90min understands Tottenham are looking to add extra depth to their forward line and hold an interest in Brazilian trio Gabriel Jesus, Richarlison and Raphinha, as well as Raheem Sterling.

The club held talks earlier this week with Roma over the availability of Zaniolo, who is capable of playing off the right flank, as a number ten or even as a striker. Spurs are huge admirers of the Italy international and any deal for him would likely be cheaper than for most of their other forward targets.

While Zaniolo only turns 23 at the beginning of July, he has already suffered two ACL injuries in his short career. He missed the entirety of the 2020/21 season but made 42 appearances in Roma's most recent campaign, scoring eight goals - including the winner in May's Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord.

Tottenham have also offered Roma players as part of any deal, with Wales international Joe Rodon the main name discussed. He signed for Spurs in October 2020 when current Giallorossi boss Jose Mourinho was in charge.

Rodon's game time in north London has been severely limited since his arrival from Swansea, playing just 24 times for Spurs in all competitions - though Conte has admitted that he perhaps should have utilised the centre-back more often in his tenure.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are continuing talks with Middlesbrough over Djed Spence, and 90min understands there is still belief that a deal will be struck for the wing-back in the near future.
