Tottenham in Talks With Real Madrid Over Deadline Day Deal to Re-Sign Gareth Bale

Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with Real Madrid over a potential deadline day deal to bring Gareth Bale back to the club seven years after he moved to Spain in a world record transfer.

Bale has been linked with a Real exit for some time, first seriously broaching the subject immediately after his decisive role off the bench in the 2018 UEFA Champions League final.

Real later pulled the plug on a proposed move to China last summer, but tensions came to a head when Bale posed with a Welsh flag on international duty in November in celebration of qualifying for Euro 2020 that read ‘Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order’.

A source has told 90min that Jose Mourinho was informed by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy when he was appointed in November that he would try to sign Bale if the new manager wanted it. These late talks for the 30-year-old appear to be that pledge coming to fruition.

It has been confirmed to 90min that there was a conversation about Bale between Spurs and Real late on Thursday night. There is, however, an element of simply humouring Mourinho.

When Zidane, who has famously had a strained relationship with Bale, was asked, he said, “Gareth is here with us and I am counting on him. I am not contemplating [an exit].”

The Times has claimed ‘Spurs ‘believe they have made a breakthrough’ in talks with Real and have a ‘growing confidence’ that they will be able to complete a deal before the 11pm transfer deadline.

The Times also explains that the ‘finer details’ of any such move to Spurs are yet to be agreed and that is likely to be no small task owing to Bale’s enormous wages.

The newspaper notes that the possibility of a deal for Bale was first raised when Levy approached Real earlier this month with the intention of offering them the chance to buy Christian Eriksen, who has now since completed a switch to Inter.
