Tottenham Hotspur trio Sergio Reguilon, Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso as well as West Ham United's Manuel Lanzini broke the government's COVID-19 regulations by spending Christmas Day together.
The UK government ruled that households in London were not allowed to mix on Christmas Day because of rising cases of COVID-19 in the capital city, whereas those in less-hit areas were permitted to form bubbles of no more than three households to celebrate the day.
The four London-based players were therefore forbidden from spending Christmas outside their own home, but reports including from the Daily Mail note that the quartet were pictured together despite the rules stating they must not mix.
An image, which was posted on Instagram by a friend who has since made their profile private, sees no less than 18 people mixing with no social distancing.
Lanzini posted a picture of his own household on Christmas Day in which he can be seen in the same room - believed to be Lo Celso's house - and wearing the same outfit as the group image.
"We're extremely disappointed and strongly condemn this image showing some of our players with family and friends together at Xmas particularly as we know the sacrifices everybody around the country made to stay safe over the festive period," Spurs said in a statement (via Alasdair Gold)."The rules are clear, there are no exceptions, and we regularly remind all our players and staff about the latest protocols and their responsibilities to adhere and set an example. The matter will be dealt with internally."
Now, in perhaps the least surprisingly revelation of 2021 so far, journalist Duncan Castles claims that both Lamela and Lo Celso have tested positive for COVID-19 in the build-up to Saturday's game between Spurs and Leeds United.
Lo Celso is currently injured, but both Reguilon and Lamela played in the recent meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
As for Lanzini, he has played in all three of West Ham's games since the alleged meeting of players, taking to the field against Brighton, Southampton and Everton.
Despite the outbreak at the club, Spurs are not believed to have asked for the Leeds match to be postponed and Jose Mourinho is prepared to turn to other options in his squad to cope with the pair's absence.
