Tottenhams Greatest Weakness Exposed After Once Again Relinquishing Lead Against Sheffield United

There is an all too familiar narrative unfolding for Tottenham Hotspur at present, as they drew their fifth match this season against Sheffield United on Saturday.

Five draws from 12 games might not be the worst start ever, but when you take into account that Spurs have earned all three points just three times during that spell, issues that previously lay dormant bubble to the surface to paint a bleak outlook moving forward.

Currently 12th in the table - which could become worse depending on the results on Sunday - Mauricio Pochettino is finding himself under enormous pressure to turn the tide at Spurs and bring an end to what is a seemingly never-ending trend.

Having led through Heung-min Son in the second half, Spurs were let off the hook by VAR shortly after when the technology ruled out the Blades' equaliser by a hair's breadth. Thinking they had got away with one and could secure all three points, George Baldock's cross-shot somehow ended up the Spurs net to earn the visitors a thoroughly deserved share of the spoils.

It seems as at present, whenever Tottenham appear as if the win is on the horizon, that glimmer of hope is snatched away with unnerving frequency, something confirmed by the stat kings Opta.

Indeed, no other side in the Premier League has lost more points from winning positions this season than Pochettino's side. The 12 points they have let slip have contriubuted to a run of five league matches without a victory, having surrendered a lead in each of their last four top-flight encounters.

While there are a whole host of issues in north London that need ironing out, the fact they have surrendered a lead so often in the division is one of genuine concern, especially when you consider those extra 12 points would have them in the top four.

There are two sides to the coin. One will say this international break is coming at the perfect time for Tottenham, who must recharge, regroup and rekindle their winning touch with hard yards on the training pitch. Meanwhile, another match straight away could be deemed as the best opportunity to right plenty of wrongs, and having to wait until 23 November may cause more harm than not.

That is all redundant, however, if the club don't add some steel to their game and toughen up when holding a lead. Because, you can have three games a week or one every three weeks, but if you can't defend properly for 90 minutes, then this torrid run will only continue to worsen.
