Tottenhams Gareth Bale makes it into Marcas team of the year

Tottenham's Gareth Bale has been included in the team of the year chosen by the readers of the Madrid-based sports newspaper Marca in a survey of more than 125,000 votes.

The Wales international, who was the only British player selected, was named at left-back in a side containing seven of Spain's World Cup-winning side.

Bale has been a sensation for Spurs this year with his hat-trick against Inter Milan in the Champions League his most notable achievement.

The 21-year-old's inclusion alongside the Barcelona trio of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi proves just far how stock has risen and further evidence of his growing stature in the game.

Bale insists he is happy at White Hart Lane and Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is unlikely to accept any bids for him.

But Real Madrid, Barcelona and other top European clubs will no doubt be tracking the player from Cardiff.

Marca's Team of the Year (4-3-3): Casillas (Real Madrid);  Maicon (Inter Milan), Pique (Barcelona), Puyol (Barcelona), Bale (Spurs); Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Xavi (Barcelona), Iniesta (Barcelona); Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Villa (Barcelona), Messi (Barcelona).
