Twitter Reacts as Spurs Ease Past Red Star Belgrade in Welcome Respite From Premier League Worries

The horns are most definitely sounding out at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at this present time.

Bleak is one word to use, but that insinuates that there is no hope. And that simply isn't true, because after all, there's always the ​Champions League, right?

You can definitely get some superb odds on ​Tottenham reaching another European final after the dismal start to the season Mauricio Pochettino's side have had thus far. That said, it was a similar scenario last season, and we all know what happened then.


Regardless of the dire straits this Spurs side may be in currently, their best result of the season came against Wednesday night's opponents Red Star Belgrade in the reverse leg, and this clash handed Poch's men a perfect opportunity to right a fair few wrongs and rediscover an inkling of confidence.


One of the key gripes among Spurs fans has been an insistence on fielding wantaway midfielder ​Christian Eriksen in place of summer arrival Giovani Los Celso, but those discontent supporters got their wish at the Rajko Mitic Stadium.

He made an early impression, n' all.

Spurs looked...relatively OK against their Serbian opponents during the opening 20 minutes, with Lo Celso (can you believe it) showing some good touches in the attacking third as the visitors tried to break through the determined Red Star defence.

And then a chance!!! To Red Star?

Not just any chance at that, an utterly glorious one that resulted in a combination of rubbish finishing from Milan Pavkov and fine goalkeeping by the guy whose name nobody on Twitter could spell.

​​Lo Celso then robbed the Serbian side in the midfield, made a burst towards goal and found Harry Kane...

Who smacked the post.

The ball fell to Son Heung-min...

Who smacked the Red Star player.

The ball fell Dele Alli, then to Kane, then Son again.

Who smacked the crossbar...

It then fell to Lo Celso...

Who smacked the back of the net. Finally!

​​And, y'know, mad things like that very rarely happen.

It is so uncommon to see the post and crossbar struck in the same passage of play, it just doesn't....

Oh, never mind. Red Star did it too.

​​Having not scored in the group stages at all last season, Son did the business once again against the plucky Serbians, firing high into the net after being found by Dele Alli.

With Spurs looking comfortable, the nail was officially hammered into the Red Star coffin just four minutes later as Son finished off a superb flowing move to ensure the 1,200 traveling fans who will make the long trip home will be a happy ol' bunch.

​​Some fans were getting rather excited.

It is only Red Star, after all. But you can't begrudge people seeing their side play well.

The game petered out massively from that point on, especially when Pavkov had to leave the field through injury, reducing Red Star to ten men with the hosts having already made all three substitutions.

Which prompted some time to think from the Spurs lot.

'What do we do going forward?', 'Who do we play in the ​Premier League?'

Some interesting chat emerged.
