As midfielder Michael Carrick stated afterwards: "The bigger picture is a lot brighter than our performance in this game. We have been fourth for so long this season."
For Martin Jol the job of analysing what went wrong, particularly in the first half, will take centre stage this week.
The Dutchman said: "We made all the mistakes we could make. We were nervous and didn't show composure on the ball. In the second half we could have been losing five- or six-nil, but we stood up and showed a lot of character."
