Zokora: 'I played for four years in Belgium and they hate me'

Didier Zokora believes his spell at Belgian side Genk led to Anderlecht fans targeting him during last night's UEFA Cup match.

Despite another abject performance, the 1-1 draw at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium secured us a place in the knockout stages of the competition but the match ended in a sour note as a section of the home support threw objects on to the pitch, one of which struck Zokora. The midfielder, somewhat exaggerating the impact, fell to the floor before Paul Robinson collected up several of the 'missiles' and handed them to the match official.

Zokora was left in no doubt as to why he has been targeted. "I played for four years in Belgium and they hate me," said Zokora.

It isn't the first time this season that Anderlecht fans have got their club into hot water - the club were fined for crowd disturbances during a Champions League qualifier against Fenerbache earlier this season.

Jaunde Ramos, who was himself a victim of fans throwing missiles during his time at Sevilla, empathised with Zokora, saying: "This is very bad for the players and those who work in football.

. But I did not see what happened. We have to be left in peace on the pitch and you can't have objects thrown because someone could get hurt."

The sides shocking defensive displays continued as Michael Dawson's lapse in concentration blotted an otherwise fine display from the young defender, as Bart Goor capitalised to score for the Belgians. Tottenham hit back instantly with a penalty from Berbatov after Jenas was felled with the goal at his mercy. But we were lucky. We struggled to keep possession and Anderlecht squandered several chances. if It it wasn't for Paul Robinson's brilliant save with just five minutes left, qualification for the next round of the competition would have looked precarious. The England international seems to have reacted well to being dropped for the disastrous match against Croatia.

Tottenham have been mentioned amongst the favourites for the competition but on this evidence that confidence seems to be misplaced. Ramos tends to agree: "We're far from achieving this. We have to wait for the draw, we have to get better because we look a bit vulnerable."
